So first of all thanks to the handful of people (or bots, who are people too) that subscribed based on my first post. Way more than I expected, so that’s awesome. Inspires me to keep going. Bots are allowed to like music too.

A couple of caveats to anyone reading this - like anyone on this platform, I’m learning it as I go along. I’m focusing on consistency (1 post per week for now) as opposed to absolute brilliance. I want to establish getting posts out on a regular basis then I’ll focus on upping the quality. You all get it. I’m practicing.

Also last week I said that these aren’t necessarily in any particular order. Turns out that’s not true.

Playlist Breakdown

With all of that unnecessary exposition out of the way, here are the songs of the week for September 30th, 2022.

Press the play button and let’s get this underway.

Jenny Mayhem - Slow Burn (Sugar Jesus Remix)

This is a remix of a song that came out in 2020. The lyrics are excellent. This girl is talented. Jenny’s lyrics are airy and melodic and line up perfectly with the driving bass and old school techno of this remix from Sugar Jesus. I wasn’t going to add this song to the list but I’ve been listening to it over and over again and it’s great. The song is sort of menacing. I guess that’s the theme this week. It’s especially great in contrast to how delicate the vocals are.

Apashe featuring Lia - Behind My Eyes (Vanic Remix)

I got to know Vanic the same as most people - as a result of all of his collaborations with K.Flay years ago (Make Me Fade probably being the most famous of them).

This song is more of him doing his thing (particularly at ~2:30 when he drops one of what I could only consider his signature drops). I’d bang my head but I have a sore neck.

Jason Leech featuring MOONZz - Derealization

Despite my illustrious music pedigree I barely even know what to call this kind of music.

Space funk? Galactic jazz?

Basically what I imagine this as is the band that plays at a high end version of the cantina in Mos Eisley. Where are my Star Wars nerds at?

MOONZz is the one singing the lyrics. I wish her the best of luck getting people to find her on the internet ā€˜cause the big Z and small z thing at the end of her name is non-trivial for people who aren’t good at internet searching.

Dorfex Bos - Opinions

I was really close to making this song the song of the week.

So I’ve been listening to this tonight and I kept thinking that this song really reminded me of the late 90’s/early 2000’s and I couldn’t quite figure out why, then I realized. Right or wrong, this song reminds me of Fight Club, and specifically the Dust Brothers score.

I just went back and listened to a couple of tracks from that to even see where I got that from and I’m still lost. There’s obviously something deeply subliminal here in my memory I’m not getting.

HELLHEIM - T0NITE

I have to say that this song intimidates me a little bit. The song cover is seemingly a beautiful woman in a white balaclava. Here are the lyrics (that basically just repeat):

It’s a violent life

You could live to a hundred you could die tonight

That’s why we getting high tonight

Here are the song credits from Spotify:

A few observations:

First of all you can’t really look up this guy ā€œHELLHEIMā€ on the net as far as I can tell (if someone can find this specific DJ and his website please comment below). ā€œHelheimā€ exists, but it’s some Norwegian black metal band or something, not the same person as far as I can tell (could be wrong).

Second, the song is spelled with a zero (0), not an ā€œOā€, so that’s why you have so much trouble finding this song. Even when you do find it, you can’t seemingly find the link back to the right ā€œHELLHEIMā€ artist.

Finally, when you look up Claudel Alongo, the guy who seemingly wrote the song, he’s nowhere on the internet to be found either. Neither is ā€œTEN ++ TAILS RECORDSā€.

Anyway all of that to say that despite all of the mystery this song has been on repeat in my playlist for quite a while.

The song is only 2 minutes long, and starts with the sound of someone starting what sounds like an old school tape player or boom box prior to the music kicking in. After that the song has a really haunting, eerie, creepy vibe that I dig. It’s sort of got a horror/thriller movie thing going on. Modern horror movie slow grooves. Songs to grind to at a Halloween party, etc. Add it to the list.

Anyway that’s it for me for this week.
